The Right to Information (RTI) Act, of 2005, was enacted to ensure transparency and accountability in the functioning of public authorities. It empowers citizens to understand how and why decisions are made, fostering greater trust and openness in administration. The Act allows individuals to request and access information before forming conclusions, encouraging more informed participation in governance.

The RTI Act defines “information” broadly, covering any material, including records, documents, memos, e-mails, advisories, opinions, press releases, circulars, orders, logbooks, contracts, reports, papers, and more, as outlined under the Act.
